Peter Reid while at Leeds did bring Kevin
Blackwell from Sheffield United as his assistant manager and it was Blackwell who took temporary
control for the last game of the previous season with Leeds already down. After an awquard delay, down to possible
take-overs of the club, Blackwell was appointed manager. The inevitable sale of the playing
staff followed and Blackwell was left with the veteran Lucas Radebe, the injured Seth Johnson
and Eirik Bakke, an under performing Michael Duberry and Gary Kelly. Before a ball
was kicked in 2004-05, many critics had Leeds relegated to Divison One and the most optimistic
Leeds fans were fearing the worst. With some judicious signings, bringing in players on loan
and free transfers Blackwell pulled off a minor miracle. Leeds avoided relegation finishing in
14th place. 2005-06 and this was arguably Blackwell's first real season in charge. Free from all the
previous season's backroom turmoil he could now solely concentrate on the job at hand.
Blackwell had money to spend bringing in the likes of Cresswell and Blake plus several players
on a free including Steve Stone. An improved season saw Leeds reach the Play
Off final and although a below par Leeds lost the game Blackwell and his side were ahead of schedule.
After a bad start to the 06-07 season losing 5 of the opening 8 fixtures Blackwell was sacked. The fans
and chairman believed he had took Leeds as far as he could.
