Venables gone and the financial difficulties at Elland Road increasing. Leeds found themselves in a
precarious situation, 15th place with only eight games left of the season. Managers
weren't lining up to fill the shoes of Venables but the board quckly turned to the likeable Peter Reid. He was
appointed on a temporary basis with the brief of keeping Leeds from the drop. Reid as a player won the
PFA Players Player of the Year award in 1985 and as a manager drove Sunderland to promotion on two occasions.
Reid's first game in charge, saw him travel back to his native Merseyside where Leeds were beaten 3-1 by Liverpool.
It Looked
like the inevitable would happen. But next game saw a remarkable
turn around with Leeds beating Charlton 6-1 away. Leeds were still in with a shout of safety and safety was
confirmed with a superb win at Highbury, when Mark Viduka netted the winner in the 88th minute. Reid had pulled
it off and his contract was extended. 2003-04 and things didn't go as well for Reid or Leeds. Not helped
by Viduka who had a bust up with Reid. It was reported that Viduka wasn't towing
the line, many thought he wanted out. The football was dire though, Leeds struggled
in the bottom half. Viduka was axed from travelling to Portsmouth and after the team were beaten
6-1, Reid was sacked after 12 games, leaving Leeds bottom. Eddie Gray finished the term as caretaker manager
but couldn't help Leeds avoid the drop.
