Blackwell's assistant John Carver took up the reigns after Blackwell's sacking, taking on the role
of assistant manager. Things did not improve though. After United lost the fourth of his five games
in charge, shipping 17 goals in the process the chairman was forced to act. Chairman Ken Bates swooped for
his old friend Swindon manager Dennis Wise. Gus Poyet's services were also acquired acting as Wise's
assistant and goalkeeping coach Andrew Beasley made it three. Wise failed to turn the season round
and United were relegated to the third tier for the first time in their history.
United were deducted 15 points by the FL before the start of their first season
in FL One. In a remarkable run with the help of assistant Poyet Wise managed to get his Leeds team back on an even
footing after just five games. Wise's Leeds went on to equal the clubs record of eight consecutive wins
and amazingly pushed the team to a PO position before the Christmas period. The Wise revival seemed too
good to be true and after assistant manager Poyet left to assist Ramos at Tottenham it
seemed he took a lot of the new found spirit and luck with him. Dave Bassett replaced Poyet and United's
form soon dropped. Wise's tactics had the habbit of getting found out too often. Clearly now out of his depth Wise jumped ship when the opportunity came along to assist the board at Newcastle.
