Bassett stepped in briefly as caretaker after Wise left Leeds in a slump to join Newcastle. Chairman Bates acted swiftly by bringing in Leeds legend Gary McAllister on an initial contract that would see him manage Leeds until the end of the season. McAllister brought Steve Staunton in as his assistant. Macca steadied the ship and reversed the slump taking United to the PO Final. Too much to do with too little time for Macca has Leeds were beaten 1-0 by Doncaster. A 12 month rolling contract was offered to McAllister in recognition of his efforts in April and things were looking good for his upcoming first full season in charge.
The bookies had Leeds United as favourites for promotion in 08/09 and after an away win against Cheltenham on Nov 01 Leeds had reached second place. Exciting football with plenty of goals, affairs were on the up for
Macca's Leeds United and the prospect of promotion.
The next six league games for United though didn't prove as fruitfull with the team losing five of the six. It was a leaky defence and an impatient Leeds board that brought Maccas reign to an end at Elland Road. A successful run to the PO's the season before didn't help as it instilled great hope among the faithfull. After an away defeat at the MK:Stadium on Dec 20th that saw Leeds drop to ninth Chairman Bates decided to sack McAllister.
