Bates swung into action after the dismissal of McAllister by luring United fan Simon Grayson from Blackpool. Grayson stepped down a division to manage the club he made two appearances for in the late 80's. Almost immediately Grayson made his mark winning 6 of his first 8 games in charge. A slumbering United had been turned round as Grayson took the Whites to the Play Off's. United went missing in the PO Semi and were beaten by Millwall over 2 legs but into the season 2009-10 and this would be Grayson's first full season in charge. Expectations were high and Grayson's Leeds didn't disappoint, storming the first half the season and beating Manchester U at Old trafford in the FA Cup. A loss of form in the second half of the season saw Leeds drop out of the Play Off places but Grayson's United eventually pulled it round winning five of the remaining 7 games. United finished second and Grayson gained his first major achievement with his hometown club. Promising mid season form saw Leeds climb to 2nd in the League for 10-11 but a slump towards the end of the season took any bite out of United's promotion hopes with United finishing in 7th. With lack of investment United's form lacked for season 11-12 and Grayson was sacked on 1st February with Leeds in 10th place. Neil Redfearn took over briefly for three games before Bates moved for promotion veteran Neil Warnock.
