Raich Carter, born in Sunderland was one of the most talented forwards England ever produced. Winning
everything the game had to offer by the age of 24. At one of his clubs Hull, Carter became player-manager
and bought Don Revie from Leicester for £20,000. Carter was a schoolboy hero of Revie's.
Carter retired from football and opened a sweet shop but was soon back in football, currently managing at
Cork in Ireland when he answered a call from the Leeds board.
Taking over a Leeds that had flirted with promotion under Buckley and led by a star in John Charles
but that was suffering financially. Leeds finished 10th in his first season, with Charles bagging a club
record of 42 goals in 39 games. Carter's style of managership rubbed some players the wrong way. The commited
Burden as a result of the friction was transferred out to Bristol. In 1956 Carter did lead the way to
promotion and the first season back Leeds finished a decent 8th. The following season saw the loss of
Nightingale through injury and Charles left to Juventus for £65,000 which would no doubt have a bearing on
the low place of 17th. After the 1957-58 season, the Leeds board shocked the football world and did not
renew his contract. He felt hard done by after he had gained the club promotion and felt the board
provided inadequate funding.
