After the sorry affair with Clough the Leeds board finally turned to Jimmy Armfield. Armfield had been
a succesful and loyal defender for Blackpool, winning 43 England caps. He was manager of Bolton when the
Leeds officials offered him the job. Armfield took over a Leeds United that had made a bad start
and any hope of success for that season in the league had gone. Armfields attentions were focused on the
European Cup and he led the team to the final beating Barcelona, the favourites on the way. This was probably
Armfields biggest achievement at Leeds and would have been his and the teams greatest achievement if it
wasn't for some appalling refereeing. Leeds lost the final to Bayern Munich and Armfield was left with the
task of dismantling the great Revie side and re-building Leeds United.
Some of Armfield's noteable signings included Tony Currie, Arthur Graham, Ray Hankin and Brian Flynn who
formed part of a decent Armfield outfit that did reasonably well. He took Leeds to the semi final of the
FL Cup in 1977 and 1978 but just couldn't get the winning formula that could take Leeds all the way. The
Leeds board who were so used to success by now sacked Armfield after season 1977-78.
Armfield had steadied the ship at Elland Road and with little discomfort, considerately replaced the Revie
greats, laying a new foundation to be built on.
