Herbert Chapman was player manager of Northampton before he came to manage Leeds City in 1912. His first
achievement was significant, it was Chapman that lobbied to get City re-elected to the football league
and predicted that he would be the man to take the club up into division one.
Early performances proved inconsistent but Chapman had the team play with a style and dynamism which attracted
relatively big crowds to Elland Road, enabling the club to make a profit.
Promotion nearly came in 1913-14 when City finished fourth, their highest finish to date. No doubt this step
in the right direction was down to Chapman's style of management. His team talks and discussions with the
team on tactics was ahead of its time. Hopes were high in 1914-15 that that would be the year City finally
achieved promotion, but City poorly finished in 15th spot. Because of WW1 the regular football league was
cancelled the following season and Chapman worked at a local munitions factory. Chapman returned in 1916 but
on 16 December 1919 quit because of his unfair treatment by the FA over the illegal payments scandal. Chapman
went on to become one of the most successful British football managers ever with Huddersfied and Arsenal.
Leeds City because of the scandal were expelled from the league.
