Billy Hampson is the longest serving Leeds manager to date after Don Revie. Although only five years of his
control were actually official due to WW2. Hampson in his playing career played for Newcastle among other
clubs and also featured as a guest player for Leeds City during the Great War years. Hampson was sought out
by the Leeds board after the resignation of Dick Ray. At the time Hampson was with Ashington but opted to go to Leeds
even though they were lurking near the bottom of division one.
United finished in 18th place
that season and Hampson went to work team building, signing former England internationals Albert McInroy and
George Brown. This didn't benefit Leeds any further but he kept them comfortable in the first division. Hampson though was
building for the future signing a handful of promising youngsters, who won the Central League in 1936-37.
The War came at the wrong time for Hampson and his young team, by the time the football league resumed in
1946-47 they were all past their best. Unfortunately for Leeds Utd, Hampson kept faith in his pre War team
and Leeds were relegated with just 18 points.
Hampson was demoted to chief scout just before the end of the season and replaced by Willis Edwards. Less than
a year after that Hampson resigned and later coached football in schools.
